Al Horford Refuses to Talk New Contract Until After this Season

Al Horford has become the cornerstone of the Hawks franchise since being drafted out of Florida with the 3rd overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. He came when things were ugly and has been the cog in Atlanta’s current stretch of 8 straight postseason appearances. The Hawks have made the playoffs each year Al Horford has been a member of the team. The Atlanta fans get a lot of heat for their lack of support, and players often tend to stay away or leave Atlanta in free agency. Despite the negatives surrounding the city of Atlanta and their sports teams, Al Horford has found Atlanta as his home.

In the 2016 offseason, Horford is set to become an unrestricted free agent. The Hawks would love to sign him to a new contract before then, but it does not look like that is going to happen. Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Consitution tweeted out news regarding Horford’s contract situation.

The news should not come as a surprise, as free agency is a lot like Christmas for professional athletes. Horford will be in for a big pay day next off season. The salary cap is expected to jump, and Horford, coming off his third all-star appearance last season, is one of the most highly valued centers in the NBA.

Horford has already had the opportunity to leave Atlanta in free agency and opted to stay with the team that drafted him. He has shown nothing but his commitment to the team and the city since joining the Hawks franchise. He will likely test the waters, but at the end of the day, Hawks management is not going to be outbid for Horford’s services. The two sides will eventually come to an agreement and Al Horford will be in a Hawks uniform for years to come.
