Atlanta United move to the top spot on this week’s MLS Power Rankings

Atlanta United extended their unbeaten streak to six games after defeating the LA Galaxy in front of a sold-out StubHub Center on Saturday night. The scorching-hot XI of Atlanta United shut down Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a full ninety minutes, in what was his first time playing a full game in months. Though they wasted opportunities, goals from Josef Martinez and Miguel Almiron helped the five stripes outclass the Galaxy for the entirety of the game, and United left the West with all three points.

Meanwhile, New York City FC, who stood by themselves above the A in the previous week’s power rankings, suffered their first loss to the Portland Timbers in embarrassing fashion. The boys in blue had possession of the ball for seventy-five percent of the match but were only able to put three shots on target, and allowed the Timbers to find the net three times.

The performances were enough to advance the five stripes to the number one spot in this week’s MLS Power Rankings, followed Sporting Kansas City, who are fresh off a six to nothing slaughter of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Up next, Atlanta will return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium looking to continue their impressive form against Ignacio Piatti and the Montreal Impact.
