Braves promote multiple prospects

Watching these talented prospects fly through the Atlanta farm system is certainly a pleasure. In the past couple days, the Braves have shuffled the deck so to say between the demotion of Dansby Swanson and three notable promotions.

The most noteworthy promotion was Luiz Gohara to AAA Gwinnett. Gohara is the dark horse in the farm system to become a true ace. The past two years, he has pitched like one. The southpaw was acquired this past offseason from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Mallex Smith and Shae Simmons. As of now, the Braves look to have gotten the better end of this deal. While Mallex Smith has been electric, the Braves have Ender Inciarte holding down centerfield for the foreseeable future. Simmons has not thrown a pitch this year. Gohara has gone on to pitch his way through both A+ and AA in his first pro season with the Braves, posting a total 2.34 ERA on the season. He is starting to garner more national hype as a prospect. His promotion and Aaron Blair’s struggles could mean that Lucas Sims will be in the major league rotation as of next week.

Perhaps the most intriguing promotion, however, is the that of Touki Toussaint. Touki got off to a horrendous start of the season but has been terrific as of late. He will be headed to AA Mississippi in what appears to be a new role:

It may be a bit surprising to see the Braves go in this direction so early, but Touki undoubtedly has the stuff to be a big league closer between his ridiculous fastball and curveball. If this is truly the case, Touki could be in the bigs way sooner than people think. However, he has taken his fair share of lumps and is still just a big time lottery ticket. The Braves do have an abundance of starters though, so this could be the right move.

Last, catcher Kade Scivicque was promoted to AAA Gwinnett. He’s far from a sexy prospect, but this could put him in line to replace Kurt Suzuki as Tyler Flowers’ backup next season. Acquired in the trade that sent Erick Aybar to the Tigers, he projects likely to be a backup catcher in the big leagues at best. Getting anything back for Aybar is a steal.
