Falcons Release Rex Grossman, TJ Yates

The Falcons cut down their roster on Friday afternoon, announcing the cuts of quarterbacks TJ Yates and Rex Grossman. Yates served as the team’s backup in 2014, but only made one appearance. I thought that being the incumbent and having played in an offensive scheme similar to Kyle Shanahan’s in Houston would ensure Yates that spot, but the team has gone in a different direction. Rex Grossman is an NFL veteran who hasn’t played in a game since 2011, but was signed by the team a few weeks ago. Grossman was nothing special in his prime, so a washed up version wasn’t very appealing option to Dan Quinn & Co.

This leaves Sean Renfee as the lone backup on the roster. Renfree was a 7th round pick out of Duke in 2013, and has battled his way to win the backup QB spot after an open competition in training camp. Hopefully the offensive line can hold up and keep Matty Ice healthy and we won’t have to see too much backup play this season.
