Mallex Smith Out 8-10 Weeks With Broken Thumb

Mallex Smith was hit by a pitch in Sunday’s series finale against the Mets. The Braves announced Monday that Smith suffered a broken thumb and would be out indefinitely. We now know that timetable is going to be around eight to ten weeks. The promising rookie has been one of the few bright spots in what what has been an abominable first half of the season. He was leading the team in steals with 14 and hitting the ball at a .237 clip. Smith looks to be a valuable piece for the organization moving forward, and with Atlanta in no contention for any kind of postseason birth, they will not be in any rush to get Smith back out there. Look for him to get back into the groove of things in September, when a lot of the positions will be filled with fresh new faces.
