Managerial Candidates for the Braves

Internal Candidates:

Brian Snitker

Brian Snitker most likely will not occupy this position in 2017. However, if the young guys in the upper levels of the team’s farm system come up and this team makes big strides by season’s end, he will most definitely receive consideration. For now, he’s merely the interim.

Terry Pendleton

My personal favorite for the managerial opening. This hire keeps things internal (which the Braves love to do) and provides young players with a hard-ass coach who will ensure they are consummate professionals. Pendleton offers the fire this team has needed since Bobby Cox left. He has also been in the dugout with the team for over a decade. He’s done his dues.

Eddie Perez

Perez also has the makeup of a nice managerial candidate. Catchers historically have turned out to be good managers (not looking at you Fredi!). There is obviously a sense of familiarity here with Perez. This past winter he managed a team to the Venezuela Winter League title. Doesn’t hurt that he is bilingual, either.

External Candidates:

Mark DeRosa

The former Brave DeRosa could have a legit shot at becoming the team’s next manager if they decide to go with an outside option. Of all the external candidates, he is the only one with ties to the organization. He played with the team for seven seasons. He is young and resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bud Black

The team has been linked to Bud Black due to his relationship with John Hart, and he could most definitely be considered for the opening. The Nationals missed out on him last offseason when they issued him a low-ball offer. Could Atlanta have two Coach Buds?

Tony Pena

The current first base coach for the New York Yankees, Pena was the AL Manager of the Year in 2003 when he turned around a Royals team in nearly a decade. He has experienced a World Series Championship with the Bronx Bombers and knows what it takes to win. Managed an undefeated Dominican Republic team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. The Braves’ new regime has a lot of ties with the Yankees organization.

Joe Girardi

The Yankees have been a disappointment in 2016, and we all know the New York Media, and the Steinbrenners, are not the most forgiving. If he’s available next winter, you bet the Braves will take a good look.

Phil Nevin

Currently the AAA Manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ minor league affiliate. Just 45 years-old, if the Braves want to go with a younger option Nevin could get a look. Former All-Star, was a fun player to watch.
