The Braves make two big promotions

Perusing the Braves’ minor league affiliate box scores on a daily basis is such a joy. The system is just absolutely loaded with talent on both sides of the diamond. Today, it was announced that two of the best prospects in the best farm system in baseball had been promoted.

Acuna will be promoted to AA Mississippi after being a cog in a dominant Florida Fire Frogs offense. Acuna is regarded as a five-tool prospect and has perhaps the highest ceiling of any prospect in the system. Many have compared him to Braves legend Andruw Jones, and he undoubtedly has the potential be a 30/30 guy if he grows into his build. Acuna held his own at the High-A level and will begin the AA level at just 19-years old. The Braves’ aggressiveness with the likes of Acuna and Ozzie Albies show that they do not fear challenging their young talent.

Another big time call-up is Patrick Weigel, who is a testament to the organization’s ability to develop pitching. Weigel was a huge project for the Braves coming out of college. As a 7th round pick who had shuffled through numerous schools during his collegiate career, Weigel had serious issues with his control. In 2013 and 2014 while playing in college, Weigel had BB/9 rates of 7.2 and 9.6, respectively. Weigel has shaken these demons. After making a big jump straight from Rome to Mississippi, Weigel has already been promoted to Gwinnett after just seven starts and appears to be on the fast track to the big leagues. With the Braves currently boasting the worst ERA in baseball, the likes of Weigel, Sims and Newcomb are breathing down the neck of the Braves’ veteran starters.
