The Braves Select Austin Riley 41st Overall

The Braves finally selected a positional player in the 2nd Round of the Draft… Or did they? As of now, it’s currently unclear whether Austin Riley will be utilized as a pitcher or a third baseman (though he was listed as a third baseman when drafted). He actually played shortstop in high school, but will be moved if he isn’t pitching. The bottom line is that Riley is skilled with the bat and on the mound. He may be one of the most intriguing two-way prospects since Micah Owings, as he can hit for serious power but also has an unbelievable fastball and curveball. His changeup is still a work in progress, but Riley has impeccable control. His fastball has tipped 94, but he doesn’t consistently throw it that fast, as he sits more in the 88-92 MPH range. Riley is right-handed and is out of Desoto Central High School (Southaven, Mississippi). He is currently committed to Mississippi State. Riley is a big boy at 6’3”, 210 pounds and is still just 17 years old. The Braves continue to load up on the high school prospects, as they’re clearly eyeing the not-so immediate future. Riley’s future is cloudy yet bright.
