Atlanta United came up short of winning its first trophy in club history and instead, it finished in second place behind the New York Red Bulls.
The Five Stripes lost 4-1 against Toronto in its regular season finale and slipped to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference on Decision Day.
Lucas Janson and Marco Delgado gave the team from up north an early 2-0 lead in the first half.

At the 77th minute, Atlanta’s Josef Martinez gave the Five Stripes a slim chance of hope after converting from the penalty spot. Martinez also finished the regular season as the Golden Boot winner, after scoring 31 goals this season.

Six minutes later, Janson scored once again and extended Toronto’s lead to 3-1. Two minutes before the end of the match, Sebastian Giovinco scored one more goal to secure a 4-1 victory.
Atlanta will await its opponent for the Eastern Conference Semifinals, as the knockout round will take place Wednesday and Thursday evening. The first leg of the series will take place on Nov. 4 and the second leg will be at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Nov. 11.
