A goal by Eric Remedi, his first in his professional soccer career, gave the Five Stripes a 1-0 victory against NYCFC Sunday night at Yankee Stadium.
In a game where goal scoring opportunities were hard to come by, Miguel Almiron gave Atlanta an early lead at the 21st minute. But moments later, after analyzing the play through VAR, the goal was waved off after it was seen that Almiron was offsides on the corner kick that started the scoring play.
But at the 37th minute, NYCFC’s goalkeeper Sean Johnson was unable to hold on to the ball after a volley by Josef Martinez, and that’s when Remedi found himself in the perfect spot where he tapped the ball inside the goal to give United a 1-0 lead.
During the second half, a pass from Martinez to Tito Villalba almost gave Atlanta its second goal of the game but a good defensive play by the Cityzens kept the ball away from the back of the net.
In the end, NYCFC finished the game with more possession of the ball with 56.9 percent to Atlanta’s 43.1 percent, but they only managed to get eight shots, with zero of them being on target.
For Atlanta, this is a great victory, considering that NYCFC had only lost at home once this season.
United will host the second leg of this series on Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. ET, according to MLSsoccer.com. A win or a tie for Atlanta would see them advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Just before the end of the game, it looked like the Red Bulls would come away with a tie as Bradley Wright-Phillips headed the ball towards the goal but Columbus’ goalkeeper Zack Steffen managed to get a hand on it and keep it away from the back of the net.
