Atlanta United vs Colorado Rapids: What you need to know

atlcolorado

Home at last. Well, the road trip was only a game long, but our road form as of late makes it feel like an eternity. We aren’t even gonna talk about Wednesday, though. DC United was the better team again and beat Atlanta United for a second time this season – ‘Nuff said. It’s not easy losing to the worst team in the East, but the Five Stripes have an opportunity to make up for their poor form tonight against the worst team in the West, the Colorado Rapids.

The Basics:

  • When: Saturday, June 24th – 7:00 pm
  • Where: Bobby Dodd Stadium – Atlanta, Georgia
  • Watch: Fox Sports Southeast

Atlanta United (6-7-3)

Atlanta has won three straight home matches in eye-opening fashion. Since the Houston Dynamo match, United has outscored their opponents at home by a combined ten goals to three. Needless to say, the hostility that a sold out Bobby Dodd offers along with the team’s good run of form at home makes a road trip to Atlanta one that no team wants to embark on.

The stretch of games that Atlanta United is facing has Tata reaching for new cards. Tomorrow’s game will be the fourth in just ten days, so while the lineup probably won’t see any drastic changes, we could see players such as Kratz, McCann and hopefully Josef Martinez play a starting role against the Rapids.

Atlanta really needs to bounce back at home after losing to a team that they should have beaten. The second half of the season is upon us, so the Five Stripes can’t afford to not take at least a point against some weaker competition.

Colorado Rapids (5-9-1)

Colorado enters the game as one of the MLS’ worst scoring teams. With just 15 goals in their 15 matches, the Rapids have the worst attack in the West. If Atlanta United can somehow prevent them from scoring, they should be able to take all three.

Tim Howard is the man in goal for the Rapids. Though he definitely isn’t the same keeper that we saw in the 2014 World Cup, he’s still Tim Howard. He is still the face of the Rapids, the USMNT, and likely the starting keeper for the All-Star game, so it’s going to take some cheeky efforts for Atlanta to continue scoring at the rate they are at home.

Colorado hasn’t been on the road since May 27th. That’s a long time. They won’t complain though, as they have ZERO wins on the road in six matches. NONE. That being said, if Atlanta loses this game, we will panic. We don’t want to panic. Let’s go win this game tonight.
