Bevy of Falcons injuries from Cowboys loss could bleed into Patriots game

The Falcons had an equally abysmal performance against the Cowboys as they had against the Eagles in the season opener. There weren’t many things that went right for Atlanta. On all fronts, they struggled. The offense couldn’t move the ball through the air or on the ground outside of a couple of drives early in the game, and the defense couldn’t pressure Dak Prescott or stop any other facet of the Dallas offense. But what makes the loss even worse, multiple key starters left the game on Sunday.

A.J. Terrell and Foye Oluokun both exited momentarily with apparent injuries, but Jaylinn Hawkins and Hayden Hurst suffered ankle injuries that kept them out for the rest of the game. With such a thin roster, the Falcons can’t really afford to lose anyone. On Monday, they had the day off from practice but released an estimated injury report. Seven players were included, the most concerning being Cordarrelle Patterson, who has reportedly suffered a severe ankle sprain with his status for Thursday in doubt.

Below is the entire injury report for the Falcons’ upcoming matchup on Thursday night against one of the hottest and most physical teams in football, the Patriots.

After missing the Cowboys game with a concussion, Jonathan Bullard was a full participant, which is a welcome sign. Kendall Sheffield, Darren Bates, and Hayden Hurst all did not participate, while three others — Cordarrelle Patterson, Jaylinn Hawkins, and Lee Smith — were listed as limited. With two tight ends in question of missing Thursday’s game, Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenot may have to work some magic.

Per Pelissero, the Patterson injury seems to be more severe than initially thought, but there is still hope he can suit up. The Dallas game was essentially over, and the reward for keeping Patterson in the game didn’t outweigh the risk. This coaching staff has been extremely tight-lipped about injuries this year, so we probably won’t know whether or not he’ll be ready until game time. Still, the remarks from Smith seem somewhat encouraging.
