Braves claim Phillip Ervin off of waivers

Just minutes ago, the Braves announced they have claimed outfielder Phillip Ervin off of waivers from the Cubs.

Ervin had a decent amount of success as a bench piece for the Reds from 2017-2019, slashing .262/.326/.438 with 17 homers, eight triples, and 23 doubles in just 512 at-bats. He also has a knack for crushing left-handed pitching.

2020 was one to forget for Ervin, though. He hit just .086 in 35 at-bats with the Reds before being designated for assignment. The Mariners claimed him in September, but Ervin wasn’t much better in Seattle, recording just a .205 batting average with a .622 OPS. It’s not the sexiest addition, but this is just another example of Alex Anthopoulos bringing in major-league quality talent to compete for a spot on the bench.
