Braves DFA Donnie Veal, Recall Cody Martin

For the second time this season, the Braves have opted to designate LHP Donnie Veal for assignment. He once again serves a short stint with the big league club, as he has really struggled at the Major League level despite being lights out all season for AAA Gwinnett. In 4.1 innings of work this season, Veal has yielded 7 earned runs. This comes one day after Veal gave up two runs on a homer to the Giants, allowing them to tie the game late. Luckily, Atlanta won with a Jace Peterson base-clearing triple. The Braves are now getting real thin on lefties, as Ian Thomas has been traded and there are no updates on Josh Outman. Andrew McKirahan is also still serving his suspension. Veal accepted an outright assignment last time around with the team. In response, Cody Martin finally makes his way back to the big league club. Martin was sharp out of the bullpen, but was sent down after a few rough outings, which boosted his ERA to 4.12. Martin appeared in three games (two of which were starts) for Gwinnett, allowing just a single earned run in 9.1 innings of work. Martin’s arm should be fresh and he can help contribute to our bullpen once again, where he excelled earlier in the season.
