As the coronavirus continues to spread in the U.S. and across MLB, on Saturday it was reported that four Braves have tested positive, including first baseman Freddie Freeman.

According to a tweet by MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, Braves’ manager Brian Snitker relayed that Freeman is still battling a fever, but that reliever Will Smith and pitcher Touki Toussaint have been asymptomatic. Pete Kozma is the other Brave who has tested positive.
So far numerous MLB players have tested positive for the coronavirus, and not counting the most-recent Braves’ infections the total count was up to 31. Freeman — who’s 30-years-old and not in any serious danger health-wise — is perhaps the most well-known MLB star to test positive, though there will almost certainly be more as the 2020 season plays out.

Snitker also said first base coach Eric Young Sr. has chosen to opt out this year.

Bowman reports that the team’s 53-year-old first base coach, Eric Young, has opted out for the season due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. Snitker told the AJC on Saturday that the decision was all Young’s:
“It was a tough decision for him. He’s a gamer. We’ll miss him dearly because of what he brings inside this clubhouse, the energy. He’s chosen to opt out, we respect that. I respect him even more for doing that and (being with) his family.” — Brian Snitker
