Braves: Hand Freddie Freeman a lifetime contract

Unbelievable. That’s how to describe the spectacle that was Truist Park last night after Freddie Freeman delivered the biggest moment of his career — and one of the biggest moments in Atlanta sports history, for that matter — and Will Smith closed the door to send the Braves to their second consecutive NLCS. However, unlike last season, when you could hear a pin drop in a city 800 miles from Atlanta after the Braves wrapped up the NLDS, the Atlanta faithful were raucous as they watched their team win a playoff series in person for the first time since 2001, and it truly could not have happened in a more fitting fashion. The face of the Atlanta Braves for the last decade getting it done off the best closer in the game.

I mean, I really don’t think some people understand how rare what happened last night is. First and foremost, Hader is almost unhittable, but especially against lefties. Left-handed batters were hitting just .159 off Hader’s slider this season, and he hadn’t given up a homer to a lefty all season — enter Freddie Freeman.

But that’s not all. Freeman became the first player in Braves history to hit a go-ahead homer in the 8th inning or later in a series-clinching victory.

And just for good measure, I want to go back to show the moment that sent the entire city into a frenzy. But this time, I want you to focus just on Freeman.

I’m not sure about ya’ll, but that is about the happiest I’ve ever seen this man in his entire career. The pure emotion, that is what it is all about, and the fact that he wears Atlanta on his sleeve just makes it that much better.

I know it’s not going to happen, but the Braves will have about a week before they face the Dodgers and Giants in the NLCS. Wouldn’t it be nice if Alex Anthopoulos just pulled off some more magic and got an extension done before then? This man cannot play for another team, and I’m not just talking about next year. I’m talking about for life. He’s the most underrated superstar in baseball. He does everything the right way, and he actually takes pride in representing this city. Losing him would jeopardize all the good things this organization has done to get to this point. It absolutely is not an option. Hand the man a lifetime contract.
