Braves: Jesse Chavez deserves some love for his efforts so far in 2021

A lot of Braves fans were less than thrilled when the team decided to call up Jesse Chavez, but the 37-year-old journeyman is still hanging around baseball and has helped the team out in a pinch. He was pretty ineffective for the Rangers in 2020, giving up 20 hits and 13 earned runs over 17 innings, but he has been much more reliable for a Braves bullpen that has been anything but:

Chavez was tasked with serving as Atlanta’s opener on June 24th against the Reds, and he allowed two runs over 2.1 innings. Since then, he has given up no earned runs over eight appearances. In total, Chavez has tossed 11 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, three walks, while striking out 15 batters.

I’m by no means saying Chavez is a guy that will be a part of the future, but in a season in which the Braves bullpen has cost them a lot of games, he has been a pleasant surprise. That’s definitely something I didn’t expect going into this season, and hopefully, he can keep up the magic as the Braves push for another division title.
