Braves: Patrick Weigel’s Perseverance Pays Off

It’s been a long road, but Patrick Weigel is getting his first cup of coffee in the majors.

After Kyle Wright and Touki Toussaint took turns getting shelled last night, the Braves have made a move to recall Weigel and Wes Parsons.

It seems like ages since we saw him post a 2.18 ERA in Mississippi in 2016 and repeat that performance with a 2.89 ERA in 2017. Tommy John surgery can spell doom for a lot of young guys. However, Weigel kept his head down, disappeared from the prospect scene for a while and kept moving his way up the ladder after his recovery. He’s tossed 60.1 innings between Gwinnett and Mississippi in 2019 and only given up 20 ER to go along with 52 Ks. He’s as ready as he’ll ever be.

Standing 6’6 with a wicked fastball, he could be a vital piece of this Braves bullpen for the next couple weeks. Personally, I think Patrick’s future is in the rotation, but getting him some major league innings is going to be key in evaluating some of these guys going forward. Parsons has been excellent in Gwinnett, posting a 2.08 ERA. It’s imminent one of him or Parsons will be optioned to make room for Kevin Gausman, but let’s hope Patrick’s story in the majors continues past this weekend.
