Braves place Charlie Culberson on 60-day IL, activate John Ryan Murphy

We knew this was coming, but it doesn’t make it any easier. The Braves made Charlie Culberson’s season officially over on Tuesday by placing him on the 60-day IL with a fractured right cheekbone. He will be sorely missed during Atlanta’s postseason run, not just on the field but in the locker room. In a corresponding move, the Braves added John Ryan Murphy to the 40-man roster, and he will be joining the team for the final two weeks.

Murphy is a veteran catcher that has spent time with the Yankees and Diamondbacks. The Braves acquired him at the trade deadline for organizational depth. He’s known as a defensive catcher that doesn’t provide much at the plate, as can be seen by his .219 career average. Murphy will provide an extra man at the position while Francisco Cervelli heals from a lacerated finger. Outside of that, I wouldn’t expect him to see the field much unless the Braves want to give their catching trio some time off once they clinch the division.
