If you’re an Atlanta native, you know how crappy the weather has been on Wednesday. It’s been raining all day, and that could continue through the night. The forecast doesn’t look brutal for the weekend, but it does present about a 50% chance of rain on both Friday and Saturday, which could lead to a rain out.
Now, I’m not sure of the precedent Major League Baseball will set when it comes to postponing a World Series game. On one hand, I could see them doing everything they can to keep their schedule. But on the other hand, they probably want to ensure that none of the games are impacted by inclement weather. Either way, there is the possibility of a rain out this weekend, which could potentially help the Braves.
With Charlie Morton now out for the season, the Braves are short on high quality pitching. Max Fried and Ian Anderson are Atlanta’s only true starters, and the rest of the games will likely be bullpen games in some form or fashion. If Game 3 or 4 is postponed due to weather, it would allow Fried to pitch on full rest in Game 5, and we could possibly even see him again in a winner-take-all Game 7 out of the bullpen.
On top of that, it would give the Braves relievers more rest. Guys like Kyle Wright, Dylan Lee, and even Drew Smyly have given Brian Snitker quality innings this postseason, but it’s still not ideal for those guys to pitch more than a few innings combined. A.J. Minter, Luke Jackson, Tyler Matzek, and Will Smith will be heavily relied on for the remainder of the series, so the more rest these arms can get, the better.
Gun to my head, I doubt Major League Baseball ends up canceling one of these games. The forecast doesn’t look brutal, so they should be able to work around any obstacles that occur. However, if one does end up rained out, it certainly could benefit the Braves pitching staff.
