Braves Recap: Errors doom Boston as Atlanta wins their first game of the spring

MLB Pipeline

Atlanta played their second spring game of the season today, and the Red Sox made this one a little too close for comfort with a 5-3 final. Boston threatened in both the bottom of the seventh (and final) inning, but Jasseel De La Cruz limited the damage and struck out Roldani Baldwin to end it. Boston had five total errors, and Atlanta made them pay.

Huascar Ynoa: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB

Kurt Hoekstra: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 K, 2 BB

Touki Toussaint: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB

AJ Minter: 1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB

Tyler Matzek: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB

Jasseel De La Cruz: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 2 BB

Obviously, the walks are a bit of concern, but everyone is still getting stretched out. Huascar Ynoa looked sharp at first, and he’s still a candidate for the bullpen. Outside of the walks, Touki had things working as well. AJ Minter worked out of a jam in the fifth inning, and it was nice to see him battle back. Tyler Matzek was pretty sharp. De La Cruz almost faltered at the end, but he got out of it and finished this one off.

Ronald Acuña Jr: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 R

Ozzie Albies: 0-2, 1 BB, 2 R

Jake Lamb: 1-2, 1 RBI

Johan Camargo: 0-2, 1K, 1 BB, 1 R

Phillip Ervin: 1-2, 1 BB

William Contreras: 1-2, 3 RBI, 1 BB

Cristian Pache: 0-2

Braden Shewmake: 1-3, 1 SB

Atlanta was on the verge of a massive first inning after William Contreras walked to bring in a bases-loaded run, but exhibition rules ended the inning with the bags full. Ronald, Ozzie, and Lamb got Atlanta started early, and the Braves posted two first-inning runs. William Contreras looks ready to take over as Atlanta’s backup catcher, knocking in two on a single in the third inning with the bases loaded again. Atlanta could have had a little more in the first inning, but these rules are only in effect for a week or so longer.
