Braves: Riley shines as Atlanta falls in spring opener vs Tampa Bay

You can always take the spring box scores with a grain of salt, but plenty of Braves got in on the action yesterday in a seven inning exhibition against the Rays. This could be a potential World Series matchup, but there were only a few takeaways in limited action:

Kyle Wright: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Sean Newcomb: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Carl Edwards Jr: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Patrick Weigel: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Tucker Davidson: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Thomas Burrows: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

The pitching staff wasn’t fantastic overall, but as mentioned — it’s the first game of the spring, nothing to be concerned about. I would like to see Sean Newcomb get his walks down, and I’ve talked about the Braves potentially using him in the bullpen in 2021. Carl Edwards Jr had a nice start to his Braves career (sort of).

Dansby Swanson: 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB

Braden Shewmake: 0-1, 1 K

Austin Riley: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 K

Jason Kipnis: 0-3, 1 RBI

Sean Kazmar: 1-1, HR, 2 RBI

Drew Waters: 0-1, 1 BB, 1 CS

Alex Jackson: 0-1, 1 BB

Shea Langeliers: 0-2, 1 K

Trey Harris: 1-1, 1 RBI

Bryce Ball: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K

Tampa is a very good team, and a lot of Atlanta’s younger guys and vets looking to break camp played well. Austin Riley showed some encouraging signs, and Dansby looks to be picking up right where he left off. Everyone’s favorite mystery man Bryce Ball knocked in a run, and it was good to see Shea Langeliers getting some action — even if he didn’t notch a hit.
