As first reported by Miles Garrett of Fox 5, The Braves are replacing Charlie Morton with LHP Tucker Davidson after Morton broke his leg in Game 1.

Davidson was fantastic for the Braves in his first few starts before he hit the 60-Day IL with forearm tightness. Davidson was a slow starter in AA and AAA, but then began dominating on both levels. He posted a 2.15 ERA across Mississippi and Gwinnett in 2019, and had a dazzling 1.17 ERA over 23 innings in Gwinnett in 2021 before being called to the majors. With the Braves, Davidson only had one bad start out of four this season, and the rest were pretty darn impressive:
5/18: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
6/3: 5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 5 K
6/9: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
6/15: 2.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
As you can see, Davidson can be trusted to eat a few innings — something the Braves need right now. It’s unclear if he will make a start, but he’s absolutely an option as an opener. Davidson stands 6’2, weighs 215 pounds, and features a heavy three-pitch mix with a four-seam fastball, slider, and curveball. According to Baseball Savant, he has only thrown three changeups and two sinkers. His fastball-slider combo is his bread and butter, and the fastball typically averages around 93 MPH, with the slider sitting at 87 MPH. Davidson forces a lot of soft contact, but he can’t get away with 93 MPH fastballs against Houston. They are the best fastball hitting team in baseball, so his slider will have to be on to be effective.
Tucker has been on our podcast before, and he’s a great guy. I know he’s up for the challenge. He has earned it.
