Braves: Shea Langeliers keeps power stroke going in Mississippi’s win

The Braves started the week on a good note with a win over Philadelphia in its series opener. However, a ton of rain in the southeast portion of the country nearly spoiled all of last night’s minor league action as only one team was able to play a complete game.

Here’s a recap of Tuesday…

Gwinnett Stripers (15-15)

PPD @ Memphis

The Stripers and Redbirds were rained out, so the two clubs will play a doubleheader today, with Game 1 slated to start at 6:05 PM (ET).

Mississippi Braves (16-15)

W, 10-6 vs. Biloxi

  • SP, H. Deal – 4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
  • 1B, D. Lugbauer – 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBI
  • C, S. Langeliers – 1 for 5, HR, 3 RBI

BOX SCORE

The off-day on Monday didn’t seem to impact Mississippi’s recently found momentum on offense as the lineup stayed hot on Tuesday; only Trey Harris finished without a hit.

There’s a ton to unpack just from the onslaught of hits and runs by the M-Braves from last night; however, the main takeaway here is the hitting by prospect catcher Shea Langeliers.

As the tweet above indicates, Tuesday’s long ball makes five homers in six games. And thanks to his last two weeks of play (spanning 13 games), featuring a .333 AVG during that stretch, Langeliers is now up to a .268 AVG and 1.004 OPS this season. Get ready, Gwinnett… here comes your next starting catcher.

Something notable last night was seeing Braden Shewmake leading off for Mississippi. As crazy as that may seem given his performance in 2021, it must have worked as the prospect shortstop knocked in the fourth run of the M-Braves four-run 2nd inning with an RBI single.

And the hot-hitting continued for both Drew Lugbauer and Wendell Rijo as well. In that prosperous 2nd frame, Lugbauer slugged a scoreboard-hitting home run, followed by a long ball for Rijo in the 5th, just two batters after Langeliers’ deep fly.

All in all, Mississippi’s win last night was very similar to Gwinnett’s wins from earlier this season. The lineup just hits everything, so there’s basically no pressure on the starting pitcher. Tuesday’s starter, lefty Hayden Deal, wasn’t necessarily sharp… but he really didn’t need to be given the offense had given him a four-run cushion by the 2nd inning.

A quartet of relievers worked the last five innings of the M-Braves win last night, featuring an inning from Kurt Hoekstra, Sean McLaughlin, Josh Graham, and two from Will Latcham. The bullpen was shaky, allowing four runs from six hits to go with a pair of punch outs.

Rome Braves (15-15)

Lead 5-0 vs. Asheville (suspended)

  • SP, B. Elder – 2 â…“ IP, H, 3 K
  • C, L. Brown – 1 for 2, RBI
  • RF, J. Franklin – 1 for 1, R

BOX SCORE

Rome and Asheville tried to play this one but only made it to the 3rd inning before being suspended. Starting at 5:00 PM today, the two teams will resume last night’s game in the top of the 3rd inning and play a full nine-inning game, followed by a seven-inning Game 2.

But there was still action from last night worth mentioning, and it all came in the 2nd inning when Rome put up five runs. The R-Braves quickly loaded the bases in that frame with a lead-off walk by Bryce Ball and back-to-back singles by Logan Brown and Jesse Franklin. Following a strikeout by Beau Philip, both Andrew Moritz and Cody Milligan drew two straight walks, each earning an easy RBI. Then, an RBI single by Riley Delgado, a fielding error by Asheville (with runners on second and third), and a bases-loaded walk by Ball gave Rome three more runs entering the 3rd for a comfortable lead.

Though he only threw 28 pitches on Tuesday, starter Bryce Edler was sharp as the Tourists managed only a 2nd-inning single against him. Elder was pounding the zone in this one; for those 28 total pitches, only seven were called a ball.

Augusta GreenJackets (13-17)

PPD vs. Myrtle Beach

Augusta’s game was also completely washed out, though instead of playing two games today to make it up, the GreenJackets and Pelicans will play a doubleheader on Thursday, with Game 1 set to start at 5:05 PM.

As of late Tuesday night, Gwinnett’s two probables hadn’t been announced. Meanwhile, Mississippi has Odalvi Javier (1.31 ERA) listed for its game today, and as I wrote in Tuesday’s preview for this week, Javier is throwing the ball really well this season. Rome will start lefty Jared Shuster (2.25 ERA) for its second game of the doubleheader today, though, for Game 1, I’m not sure whether the team will again run out Elder or someone else. Augusta has the young sensation Roddery Munoz (6.27 ERA) slated for its matchup today.
