Braves sign James Loney

The Braves have been quick to respond to the injury to Freddie Freeman’s wrist that is expected to sideline him two months. The team has come to an agreement with free agent first baseman James Loney, according to Jon Heyman.

Loney is 33-years old, and a career .284 hitter. His most recent major league stint came last season with the New York Mets, so he is fairly familiar with the NL East. He hit a respectable .265 with nine homers and 34 RBI over 343 at bats of work.

This move makes sense for the Braves. They do not have much in the farm at the higher levels at the position, and they do not have to part with assets to acquire a veteran guy who can hold the position for the time being. Loney also has a reputation for being a plus defender at the position.

For those of you who are optimists, this move also bolsters the Braves bench for when Freeman returns. Hopefully Matt Kemp and company can keep the Braves in competition while they superstar is sidelined.
