Braves Sign Nick Masset

The Braves made a signing to bolster their bullpen Tuesday, signing RHP Nick Masset. Masset is an 8-year veteran reliever who has seen time with the Rangers, White Sox, Reds, Rockies and most recently, the Marlins. Masset has good career numbers but his ERA did inflate to 5.80 last season. A lot of this could be attributed to pitching in the launching pad that is Coors Field. Masset began the season with the Marlins, posting a 1.86 ERA with 6 K’s and 1 BB in 8 appearances. He was DFA’d by the Marlins a couple days ago to clear room for Henderson Alvarez’s return, and elected free agency after clearing waivers. Adding a veteran reliever is a great move for the Braves, as they continue to try to bolster their bullpen. Masset’s pact is a Major League deal. In a corresponding move, Cody Martin has been optioned to AAA Gwinnett. Martin has struggled his last few outings in what has otherwise been a strong rookie campaign for the righty who went unprotected in this year’s Rule 5 Draft. It is yet to be seen whether this is a permanent move or whether they may try to stretch out his arm for the 5th starter spot that Williams Perez recently took over. To make move on the 40-Man roster, the Braves designated RHP John Cornely for assignment.
