Braves Sign Ross Detwiler

With the injury to Jason Grilli, the Braves have signed yet another reliever to add depth in his absence. They started by adding Jason Fraser, and now they add a guy with a lot of NL East experience in Ross Detwiler. Detwiler was just released by the Texas Rangers after putting up an abysmal first half of the season, tossing to a 7.12 ERA in 17 appearances (7 starts) for the Rangers. Detwiler had a career 3.82 ERA with the Washington Nationals over 7 seasons and became a full-time reliever for the team last season. Detwiler is not a big strikeout guy, so as his ground ball rate has fallen so has his effectiveness. This is why he has had a rough 2015. The Braves, however, need a left-handed option in the bullpen besides Luis Avilan, so hopefully having Roger McDowell in his corner and being back in the National League can help him return to form. Detwiler’s deal is a Major League pact, and the Braves have nothing to lose with the trade as they have the 29th ranked bullpen in the league. Many believe that Jim Johnson could be a strong candidate to be traded, so perhaps John Hart is stockpiling arms in advance of the trade deadline to keep his options open. Detwiler isn’t ideal, but he serves as depth and a potential LOOGY option.
