Mike Foltynewicz has caught a lot of heat from Braves fans. There’s no debate that his absence seriously hurt Atlanta last season, especially after Mike Soroka went down with a season-ending injury. Folty was supposed to be one of the sure things in the rotation — until he wasn’t.
The scrimmage against Miami was ugly, and his debut was even more unsightly. Folty pitched a whole 3.2 innings in 2020 before his Braves career was over just like that. He may have driven us crazy last season, and it got bad enough with Tommy Milone and Robbie Erlin that I was wondering if we would see him before the postseason, but I will still never forget the best times with Folty.
Fans quickly forget his domination in Game 2 of the 2019 NLDS before his catostrophic meltdown in Game 5, and he was almost out of that forgettable first inning before a few bloop hits doomed him. I’ll also never forget his no-hitter in 2017 against Oakland barely slipping away in the bottom of the 9th. That 2018 campaign was so amazing, and he really looked like a future piece of a championship contender going forward.
Things just didn’t work out like that, but I’m glad Foltynewicz is getting another chance. Best of luck Folty, I’ll be rooting for you.
