Braves: Stephen Vogt could miss the rest of the season

When Stephen Vogt initially went down last week, it didn’t look good. Additionally, Vogt said he felt something pop on his throw to third base, making it sound even worse, which is why I was surprised he only ended up on the 10-day IL with what was labeled hip inflammation. Brian Snitker even said after he was placed on the IL that he hoped Vogt would be able to return in around 7-10 days.

I’m not sure what changed over the last week. I’m guessing the injury just hasn’t healed much, or perhaps it’s even gotten worse, but Snitker told the media today that he doesn’t know whether or not Vogt will return this season.

That’s a pretty swift turn of events considering there are still 20 games left in the season. William Contreras is up in Vogt’s place, and it looks like he will be Travis d’Arnaud‘s backup down the stretch and into the postseason, assuming the Braves wrap up the NL East. It’s unfortunate for Vogt, who was amid arguably the best performance of his career before the injury, but I’m not sure it is much of a drop-off between him and Contreras, who possesses much more upside in the batter’s box.
