The Falcons signed Casey Hayward to a two-year, $11 million contract a couple of weeks ago, and he’s already made quite the impression. During his first media availability, Hayward had some stark words for those who believe the Falcons are just an extra bye week for opposing teams. “Who says we can’t compete?”

While I don’t necessarily agree with Hayward, it is encouraging that there is some attitude on this team. Hayward is coming off a season where he started all 17 games for the Raiders and drastically outperformed his contract. He logged 46 tackles, broke up nine passes and had an interception while allowing completions on just 57.1% of his 56 targets, and opposing quarterbacks cumulatively had a 91.9 passer rating when targeting him in 2021.

In the introductory press conference, Hayward answered a bevy of questions and had some high praise for AJ Terrell.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a running mate on the other side as talented as AJ,” Hayward said.

A two-time Pro Bowler with a decade-long career told members of the media that he watched Terrell’s film. Hayward’s words carries weight; he’s played with some pretty good corners in this league. During his time in Green Bay, Hayward was opposite Sam Shields and Tramon Williams, who is also a former Pro Bowler.

“Pretty good guys, don’t get me wrong,” Hayward said of his former teammates, “but not as talented as AJ.”
