Dirk Koetter says Falcons still don’t know anything about Todd Gurley’s health

The media cannot meet with the coaches face-to-face because of the coronavirus, but they have been available via videoconference several times this offseason. Dan Quinn answered questions earlier this week, and on Thursday morning, it was Dirk Koetter’s turn. Most of the stuff he had to say was positive, but there was one comment that had me scratching my head regarding Todd Gurley’s health status. Take a look:

This is just mind-boggling. Everyone knows the Falcons took a risk on a one-year deal with Gurley, hoping he shows flashes of his 2016-2018 form when he was considered the best running back in football. However, his lingering knee issues are a serious question mark, and they will be for the rest of his career. But there are some things you just don’t tell the media… even if they are true.

By the way Koetter answered this question; it looks like the Falcons have no idea what to expect from Gurley when he arrives at camp. Will he be able to run the ball more than 150 times? Can he even be the starting running back? Koetter’s comments make the organization look clueless, which is the last thing this regime needs while they are on the hot seat. If Gurley doesn’t become a success in Atlanta, this could easily be the straw that broke the camels back, leading to a complete overhaul of the coaching staff and the general manager. Taking a risk on Gurley shouldn’t bother anyone, especially on a one-year deal, handling questions like these the way that Koetter did, however, is unacceptable.
