Exploring Second Round Options for the Hawks

Note: The second round is very unpredictable, and there’s not telling which played will be available with the Hawks’ 50th overall selection. The Hawks also own the 59th selection.

Dakari Johnson, C, Kentucky

I think that Dakari Johnson will have been selected when the Hawks go on the clock in the second round, but if he’s there the team will definitely give him a look. Johnson is a huge body at 7 feet, 255 lbs, but got stuck behind the likes of Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns at Kentucky. Though he only averaged 16 minutes a game last season, he could seriously help the Hawks down low, as they are desperate for some size. Johnson is selfish, can rebound (especially on the offense) and could be the steal of the draft. I think Johnson has a long career ahead of him as a serviceable Center.

J.P Tokoto, SG/SF, UNC

I already did a profile on how Tokoto could be a perfect match for the Hawks in the second round. Tokoto plays incredible defense, is an unselfish player and a great leader. If he can improve his shooting he can have a nice career as a 3-and-D type player, similar to Thabo Sefolosha. He could be a perfect fit for Coach Bud’s system.

Pat Connaughton, SG/SF, Notre Dame

Connaughton is another wing prospect out of Notre Dame. The two-sport athlete (baseball) made a name for himself with his performance in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Connaughton has a decent stroke and led Notre Dame in rebounding, but I think his ceiling is a role player in the NBA. I don’t see his defense translating to the NBA.

Brandon Ashley, PF, Arizona

Brandon Ashley had a nice college career for Arizona, but he never lived up to the hype he had coming out of high school. Though 6’8″, Ashley has a 7’3″ wingspan and can shoot from outside. He could be a nice fit for the Hawks offense off the bench, especially if they can help him develop his game. His balanced game will earn him a nice career as a role player in the NBA.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
