The Falcons secondary looked lost on Sunday against Russell Wilson, who carved up Atlanta’s defense to the tune of 322 yards and four touchdowns. It’s one thing to let an MVP candidate like Wilson do that; it’s another thing to make it look so easy, which is what the Falcons secondary did, forcing just four incompletions despite the defensive line continually applying pressure.
For the most part, Atlanta’s defense was healthy. Rookie Marlon Davidson did not dress, and neither did second-year cornerback Kendall Sheffield. The Falcons are hoping Davidson can make his first appearance in Week 2. He’s already back practicing, but there’s yet to be a timetable announced for Sheffield. The Ohio State product is not practicing again today after being in a walking boot last week. However, Quinn said that when Sheffield does return, he expects him to have a “significant role” in Atlanta’s defense.

It will be interesting to see who Sheffield might play over. He was listed as the fourth corner on the Falcons initial depth chart, but after the way Atlanta’s secondary performed in Week 1, there’s a need for significant improvement. Most importantly, though, is getting Sheffield back on the field healthy. Whether he’s the team’s first corner or fourth, last Sunday proved this team needs as much secondary depth as possible.
