Falcons: Johnathan Cyprien headed to IR

After sending Duke Riley to the Eagles along with a pick swap, the guy the Falcons received in return is done for the remainder of the season.

In a move to soften the blow of losing Keanu Neal, the Falcons acquired Jonathan Cyprien, who looked like he had the potential to be a decent fill in. Cyprien had a habit of creating turnovers early in his career, forcing four fumbles, recovering two more, and recording two interceptions. However, his best football is undoubtedly in the past.

He was lost for all of 2018 due to an ACL injury during camp, and the Titans inked Kenny Vaccaro to a multi-year deal to replace him, ending his tenure in Tennessee. While the current injury landing him on the IR is unknown; if it’s another knee, that would be devastating for Johnathan. His career-high 127 tackles came in his last full season in Jacksonville, which was 2016. He was a key player during the Titans playoff run in 2017, notching 11 tackles and a pass breakup. Even coming off an ACL, Cyprien would have brought some stability to Atlanta’s shaky secondary.

In corresponding moves, the Falcons have re-signed OL John Wetzel and CB D.J. White from the Eagles practice squad. The latter is a McDonough native and Georgia Tech alum who hasn’t seen much action but does have an interception in his 13 games played – 11 with the Chiefs in 2016 and 2 with the Colts in 2017 after being released by Kansas City. Wetzel has been let go of three times by the Falcons this season, as recently as October 5th. He will be brought in as a reserve on the O-Line.

Update: Per ESPN’s Vaughn Mcclure, it is a foot injury that has landed Cyprien on the IR.
