Falcons quarterback coach Charles London and the rest of the offensive staff are excited to have former Florida and Arkansas quarterback Feleipe Franks.

“Feleipe has a really unique skill set,” London said. “He has a big arm. He’s a really athletic guy. He had traits that as an offensive staff we were excited about and we wanted to work with them. We were thrilled to get him in the undrafted process.”

Franks is in an ideal situation to potentially develop into a reliable backup quarterback. Arthur Smith’s offense might take some getting used to, but Matt Ryan and AJ McCarron are the perfect mentors for the first-year player. McCarron is a career-backup and can show Franks exactly what he needs to do daily to make it in a similar role. Ryan is a pro’s pro and a potential Hall-of-Famer with 13 years of experience under his belt. There are not many better players than Ryan to learn from at any position. If Franks wants to be a starting quarterback at the next level, Matty Ice will know exactly what he needs to do to get there.

Franks has all the physical tools to succeed in this league. He had poor coaching for the developmental years at Florida but improved every season and had a career year after transferring to Arkansas — completing 163/238 of his passes for 2,107 yards, 17 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Franks even impressed in Mobile at the Senior Bowl, prompting many to believe he would be drafted.

More than likely, the Falcons will stash Franks on the practice squad if an injury were to occur. There is a possibility he develops into an everyday backup in this league, but I believe these reports are a bit optimistic.
