Falcons: Quarterback Josh Rosen agrees to a deal

We knew it had to happen after A.J. McCarron went down with a torn ACL in Week 2 of the preseason, but the Falcons made their backup quarterback signing official late Monday night, and it’s an option a lot of fans will be fond of.

I don’t have too much of an opinion on Rosen. I highly doubt he ever becomes a high-level quarterback in this league, but why not? It’s not like the Falcons will win many games if Matt Ryan goes down with injury. At least Rosen is a fun experimental project. Who knows; perhaps Arthur Smith can take him under his wing and work some magic as he did with Ryan Tannehill.

Rosen was the 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft. He was selected by the Cardinals and started in 13 games as a rookie but with very little success. He threw more interceptions (14) than he did touchdown passes (11), and the team lost 10 of the 13 games he started. The following offseason, he was traded to the Dolphins for a second-round pick. He lost the starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick but still ended up appearing in six games (starting in three). Once again, though, success was few and far between. Rosen tossed just one touchdown compared to five picks.

Most recently, Rosen caught on with the 49ers after injuries ravaged their quarterback room. He never appeared in a game for San Francisco, and eventually, his services became unnecessary after they drafted Trey Lance. It’s one of the more disappointing careers for a quarterback selected in the top-ten, but there was a reason he was drafted that high, and he’s still just 24-years-old. There’s potential there, and perhaps Arthur Smith can help unlock it.
