Falcons: Which players should be a priority for the practice squad?

The Falcons released their initial 53-man roster today, and there weren’t many big surprises. I still think there will be some moves made, especially at guard, but here’s the first roster:

With that in mind, there are a few camp and preseason standouts that I think the team should prioritize keeping. This is subject to change; someone like Feleipe Franks may be delegated if the Falcons sign someone, but this is a reaction to the initial roster.

CB Chris Williamson

Most of these guys are undrafted free agents, but the Gainesville, GA native was a 7th round pick by the Giants last season. I thought he could stick on the roster, but he tailed off a little bit towards the end of the preseason. I think he’s worth keeping around for some developmental depth.

RB Caleb Huntley

Huntley was one of the few bright spots of the preseason, and I was genuinely surprised when the Ball State product was left off the roster. He’s solid and near the top of my list of guys who need to stick around if he doesn’t get a chance elsewhere.

LB Erroll Thompson

Dorian Etheridge played himself into a roster spot, which left Thompson as the odd man out. I still liked what I saw out of him at times, and he would make for good depth as a pure downhill thumper.

OL Ryan Neuzil

I thought that the App State product had a real shot at making the roster given how thin the offensive line is and his connection to Dwayne Ledford. He played pretty well in the preseason, and lord knows the Falcons need all the help they can get on the interior.

OL Joe Sculthorpe

You can pretty much copy and paste what I said about Neuzil for Sculthorpe. There’s a Ledford connection, and he played well in the preseason. I think he’s going to stick around as well.
