Former Brave Cameron Maybin retires from baseball

Now a month into the lockout, there hasn’t been much to talk about regarding Major League Baseball, but we do have a bit of news tonight involving a blast from the past, as Cameron Maybin announced his retirement.

Still just 34-years-old, Maybin has had an incredibly lengthy major-league career for somebody his age. It began with the Detroit Tigers, who drafted him 10th overall in 2005. There he quickly became one of the most highly-touted prospects in baseball before making his major-league debut in 2007 at the age of 20. However, the following offseason, he was traded to the Florida Marlins in the blockbuster deal that sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit.

Maybin’s time with the Braves came a decade after he was drafted and was short-lived. He played in Atlanta for just one season — a rebuilding year in 2015 that saw the Braves lose 95 games. However, he preformed pretty well with a tomahawk across his chest, smacking 10 homers and 18 doubles over 141 games to go along with his .267 average. It wasn’t anything eye-popping, but Maybin was actually one of the better players during those dark years of Braves baseball that seem like decades ago now, and it ended up revitalizing his career, allowing him to play six more seasons in the majors.
