Hector Olivera Showcases Power, Fredi Gonzalez Loses Control of Clubhouse?

The Braves have been by far the worst team in baseball since the all-star break. In the midst of a 12-game skid, the Braves headed into a 3-game series with the Phillies in a battle of the MLB’s worst records.

Hector Olivera broke the door open in the first game with a deep double off the left-center field wall. Olivera stepped in for his final at bat in the 9th inning against Phillies reliever Colton Murray. He skied a deep fly ball just over the short left field porch at Citizens Bank ballpark. Olivera seemed to be fooled by the pitch, but he got just enough of it to muscle it over the fence.

Olivera came to Atlanta in great shape and has tremendous strength. Do not be surprised to see a lot more of these over the coming seasons. The home run capped off a 7-2 Braves victory. The win put the Braves 2 games in front of the Phillies who currently own the worst record in the majors. The Braves followed with a disappointing shutout loss to the Phillies in Game 2 of the series. The Braves head into the rubber match of the series with an opportunity to become the worst record in baseball with a loss to the Phillies.

With the Braves in one of their worst slides in decades, Ken Rosenthal released some disappointing news in regards to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

The Braves were not expected to compete this season, but performed admirably through the first half of the season. The results earned the manager an extension through the 2016 season, a move many Braves fans were skeptical about. The second half has been a complete disaster, and Gonzalez continues to watch with seemingly no emotion. Gonzalez has lost the clubhouse and the players certainly do not look to be playing for him. The situation is fluid, so we will have to wait and see how the Braves handle it going forward. However, if Fredi is back next season after September collapses in 3 seasons since taking over, the organization is fooling themselves. Hopefully at the very most Fredi is just here through the rebuilding stage of the new-look Braves. If the team is serious about winning, they must go in a different direction.
