Moments ago, the Braves announced they were optioning Jeremy Walker to AAA Gwinnett and bringing up Patrick Weigel to Atlanta.

The move comes after Walker tossed 3.1 innings of one-run ball against the Marlins, following Keuchel’s dismal showing. That was the first run the rookie has allowed in 6.1 innings of work at the major league level, as he attempts to make a case for a bullpen role on the playoff roster.

The #3 prospect on our Braves prospect list, Drew Waters, called Jeremy Walker’s performance in the minors “eye-opening.” The 24-year-old sinkerballer began last year as a starter but transitioned into a relief role this season, and it has suited him well. In 58.2 innings with Mississippi, he posted a 2.45 ERA and only walked five batters compared to 57 strikeouts. His stuff is legit, and the demotion is merely so the Braves can have a fresh arm in the pen. If Swanson, as reports have suggested, is not close to a return; we should be seeing Walker back in Atlanta very soon.

Patrick Weigel is our 12th ranked prospect in the Braves’ farm system. This is the second time this year he has been called to Atlanta, but he has yet to make his major league debut. In 22 appearances (17 starts), Weigel has a minuscule 2.67 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 67.1 innings.
