There is a great possibility the Hawks will not be re-signing Paul Millsap, hit the rebuild button and feature four starters 25 years or younger heading into to next season. That is the reality after new general manager, Travis Schlenk, dealt Dwight Howard for scraps and admitted that Millsap will likely get more lucrative offers elsewhere.

If that is indeed the case, Collins could be a sneaky dark horse candidate for rookie of the year. And do not tell me it cannot happen, as Malcolm Brogdon won the award last night at the first annual NBA Awards show, and he was 36th pick in last year’s draft. Collins is an NBA ready prospect on the offensive side and could develop to be of the Hawks top scoring options as early as next season.

At 6’10”, 230 pounds, it is going to take a little bit of bulking up for Collins to be able to establish himself as the terrific rebounder and defender he was in college. However, his height at the power forward spot should allow him to be a reliable rebounder, and his shot blocking ability should translate well over to the NBA.

Collins was the most efficient player in college basketball last season and is heading to a team that is in the midst of a rebuilding stage. It also helps that Collins is surrounded by some of the best coaches in the league when it comes to player development. This rookie class is loaded with talent, so a Rookie of the Year award seems far-fetched at the moment, but expect Collins to be a sneaky underdog candidate and finish in the top 5 to 10 range.
