Offseason Recap: Braves Sign A.J. Pierzynski

(David Goldman/Associated Press)

Shortly after the New Year, the Braves made another under the radar move, signing catcher A.J. Pierzynski to a 1 year, $2 million deal. Pierzynski will backup one of Atlanta’s top prospects, Christian Bethancourt. However, Bethancourt is known more for his defensive ability than his bat. Bring in Pierzynski. The 2-Time All-Star will offer a lot of pop off Atlanta’s bench just a few seasons removed from a campaign in which he hit 27 homers. Pierzynski, 38, won the Silver Slugger Award that season. Though he had a little bit of a down year last season, expect Pierzynski to still get a fair share of starts this season and contribute with his bat when needed. The 17- year veteran does have a league wide reputation for being a jerk. I think this is overblown and with guys like Jonny Gomes in the locker room I really don’t have too much concern over the team chemistry. I think this was another sneaky veteran pickup made by John Hart.
