Profiling Positional Players the Braves May Take at #14

Nick Plummer

Nick Plummer is an outfielder out of Brother Rice High School in Michigan. At 5’11”, 195 pounds, Plummer is not the most physically imposing specimen, and he hails from a state that doesn’t produce much baseball talent. Don’t let that fool you, Plummer can play. Many say that Plummer could have the best bat in the draft, and he has a ton of power. He can field and has decent speed. A centerfielder in high school, Plummer will likely play in left field at the next level due to his average arm. Many have slept on Plummer due to his size, but the Braves are going to choose who they think is the most talented player on the board at #14, and if they go offense, it could be Plummer. Plummer is committed to the University of Kentucky, which could scare off some teams, but it’s likely that he signs if he is drafted that high.

Tyler Stephenson

The Braves have always had a knack to pursue local prospects, and they may once again with Tyler Stephenson. A Catcher out of Kennesaw Mountain High School, Stephenson is a big boy at 6’4”, 225 lbs. He is the highest ranked Catcher in this year’s draft class, and has a plus arm behind the plate and a power bat. It’s hard to find power-hitting Catchers in today’s game, and Stephenson has flown up boards after a great senior season. It’s not even a given that Stephenson will be available at #14, and the way his stock has risen it’s doubtful he is playing for Georgia Tech next season, where he is currently committed.

Garrett Whitley

Garrett Whitley is a centerfielder out of Niskayuna, New York, and there’s really no telling where he will be selected in the 1st Round on Monday. Whitley is the whole package. He has the potential to be a 5-tool player. He has incredible bat speed, incredible running speed, and can hold his own with the glove. If Whitley develops like many predict, he could possibly be a 30-30 type player. Others think his bat needs work, and he that he has bust potential. Many of these doubts stem for the fact that Whitley hasn’t seen elite level baseball as a northeast high school player. The Wake Forest commit hit .356 in his senior year. I think Whitley is a boom or bust pick at #14, but with 5 of the first 75 picks in the draft, John Hart and Roy Clark may opt to take a chance on Whitley.
