Prospect Profile: Touki Toussaint

Touki Toussaint is a special prospect. That I can say with confidence. The right-hander was selected 16th overall straight out of high school in last year’s draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hailing from Florida, Toussaint was one of the most highly touted prospects in the country in last year’s draft. Just a season later, Toussaint has been traded to the Atlanta Braves. Though he struggled as an 18-year old in rookie ball last season, Touki was still ranked as the 71st best prospect in baseball by Baseball America heading into this season. Now that he’s in the Braves organization, he is pitching better than ever. Toussaint was acquired by the Braves for Phil Gosselin a few weeks ago. This deal served as salary relief for the D’backs, as Atlanta took control of Bronson Arroyo’s contract as he recovers from Tommy John Surgery. Arizona GM Dave Stewart got a ton of heat for around the league, and there’s definitely a consensus around baseball that this deal is a steal for Atlanta. Toussaint supposedly never hit 96 MPH with Arizona, but Toussaint has made just 2 starts for Rome and has already been clocked in at 98 MPH. He’s given up just one run in his first two starts for Rome, as he continues his excellent 2015. This season, he has a 3.17 ERA in 9 starts in low-A ball. This is all at 19 years old. We currently have Touki Toussaint ranked as our 4th best prospect in the Braves’ farm system. However, with Matt Wisler already in the bigs and Jose Peraza following shortly behind, in a year from now Toussaint may be the top prospect in our system at age 20. This was another one of those deals that made you stop and think: Damn, John Hart really is a genius. This is another example of how Hart has acquired high upside pitching prospects without giving much in return. He literally bought Toussaint from the Diamondbacks. This is a guy who without a doubt has frontline starter potential written all over him. Toussaint throws a fastball, curveball and changeup that all have the potential of being plus pitches. He also has great speed separation, which makes him a headache for many hitters. The sky is the limit for Toussaint, and with the way Atlanta has developed starting pitching, who knows how good this kid will be in 4 years.
