Raheem Morris updates Kirk Cousins’ future and Falcons’ expectations

With the NFL owners’ meeting underway, everyone is asking Raheem Morris the same question: What the hell is going on with Kirk Cousins? The Falcons‘ head coach spoke to the media, providing a few notable updates.

According to Steve Wyche, Morris confirmed that Cousins has made those in the organization aware that he would like to be a starter, leading many to believe he will waive his no-trade clause if/when the time comes. However, at this time, no discussions have materialized.

Continuing, Josh Kendall reported that Raheem Morris doesn’t know if Cousins will show up for OTAs because they are voluntary. However, Kendall added that the expectation is for Cousins to show up for mandatory workouts and be good a teammate if it gets to that point.

“We still feel very strongly about Kirk being our backup quarterback. We still feel very strongly about the human. Obviously, it’s a business,” Morris said.

The Falcons are clearly at an impasse, and nothing is going to come to fruition until after the draft later this month. There are only a few teams left with a vacancy at quarterback, and the draft will fill some of those voids.

The hope is that a team like the Browns emerges from Green Bay without a signal caller and comes crawling to Terry Fontenot, hat in hand. It won’t be about getting a valuable draft pick for the Falcons. It’ll be about getting Cousins’ contract off the books. That’s the singular goal this offseason.
