According to MLBTradeRumors.com and The Athletic’s Rob Biertempfel , the Braves took a big swing at the trade deadline, attempting to acquire Pittsburgh outfielder Bryan Reynolds:

MLB Trade Rumors goes on to elaborate on the large asking price for Reynolds, which I echoed in a piece about acquiring him back in July:

Biertempfel’s report comes within the context of a larger piece about which current Pittsburgh players are most likely to be on the roster come Opening Day, and Reynolds is seen as someone who is “not going anywhere.”  Reynolds’ price tag will start rising this offseason in his first of four (as a Super Two player) arbitration-eligible years, the Bucs have him controlled through the 2025 season, and the team is surely hoping to be back in contention while Reynolds is still producing at a high level.

I think making a big swing for Reynolds would be worth the asking price. He made the 2021 NL All-Star Team, thanks in part to his .293/.382/.505/.887 slash line with 33 doubles, five triples, and 24 home runs. The biggest appeal with Reynolds outside of his stellar play is his contract — he’s under team control for four more seasons. From my article in July:

The Braves would have to pay up big time for the All-Star Reynolds, even if he didn’t have four more years of control under his belt. His switch hitting and .909 OPS would appeal to any club, but with the futures of Cristian Pache and Marcell Ozuna looking cloudy, Reynolds would be fantastic for the Braves for many years to come. Even though he has 17 home runs, Reynolds is still hitting over .300, showing that he can be a steady presence for a Braves team that needs guys who can get on base.

I have no problem giving up big-time prospect capital for Reynolds while bringing back one of Adam Duvall, Jorge Soler, Eddie Rosario, or Joc Pederson. An outfield of Acuña, Reynolds, Pache or Waters (if they are kept), Duvall, and others would be a scary sight for any opposing pitcher.
