Kolby Allard was drafted 14th overall by the Braves this season. The left-hander was drafted straight out of San Clemente High School alongside his Catcher and personal friend Lucas Herbert, who the Braves also opted to select early in the draft. Fans started to fear for the worst as the days went by and Allard had not signed. The southpaw had committed to play for UCLA and many feared he may fulfill that commitment.

Things must have not gone as smoothly as planned for Atlanta when negotiating with Allard. Scout Roy Clark felt that Allard would “sign within the week” of being drafted, but it took almost until mid-July. However, he had been throwing a ton of bullpens for Atlanta prior to being drafted, and they were the only team that he allowed to access his medical reports. He missed his senior season due a stress fracture in his back, but he should be ready to go. The agreement will not become official until Allard’s physical is complete, which is scheduled for next week.

This is a kid who the Braves had on the top of their short list heading into 2015, and if not for his injury he may very well have been the number 1 pick in the draft this year. His bonus is a little bit over $3 million. With this signing, the Braves have signed all  of their first 25 picks. Allard ranks as SportsTalkATL’s 5th ranked prospect in the Braves’ system.
