The Braves likely won’t meet George Springer’s reported asking price

It was always going to be unlikely that the Braves met the asking price of George Springer — arguably the best outfielder on the market. But some fans — most likely the delusional ones — were still holding out hope that maybe this was the time Alex Anthopoulos pulled the trigger on a blockbuster free-agent signing. I’m still not counting one out, but based one what Springer is reportedly asking for, he’s not coming to Atlanta.

I’ll admit; part of me thought that some of these marquee free-agents would accept one-year contracts in hopes that the market would be friendlier next offseason, but that doesn’t appear to be the case — at least not for the guys who are considered the cream of the crop. Right now, both Springer and teams interested are playing the waiting game, but eventually, I expect someone to meet his demands, which seems to be a multi-year deal worth well north of $100 million — something I don’t see the Braves giving to anyone, especially with a Freddie Freeman contract extension looming.
