The Braves Select Mike Soroka 28th Overall

The Braves continue to stockpile pitching, as they drafted a second pitcher in the 1st Round in Mike Soroka. The right-hander stands at a towering 6’4”, 200 lbs, and he says he is still growing. Soroka is out of Bishop Carroll High School in Alberta, Canada. He actually worked a lot with former Braves reliever Chris Reitsma, a fellow Canadian.  Still just 17, Soroka has time to work use his long build and generate some more velocity on his low 90’s fastball that has a ton of movement. Soroka’s best secondary pitch is his changeup, and he has a curveball in his arsenal as well. Soroka is currently committed to UC Berkeley so hopefully the Braves can convince him to sign. They have the fourth-largest bonus pool in the MLB for this year’s Draft, so it likely won’t be an issue. Soroka is a high-upside pick due to his young age and raw ability. He projects to be a mid-rotation starter in the big leagues. Welcome to Braves Country Mike!
