Top 10 Greatest Braves of All Time: Number 5

The number 5 player on our list of the top 10 greatest players in Braves history is Tom Glavine. Glavine’s career did not get off to a stellar start as he lost 17 games, compared to only 7 wins in his first full season as a starting pitcher. It did not take Glavine long to figure it out though. In 1991, Glavine’s 5th season in the MLB, Glavine won 20 games with 2.55 ERA on his way to his first Cy Young award. Glavine’s 20 wins and league leading 9 complete games were the key reason for the Braves memorable worst to first season in 1991. Glavine continued his success with two more consecutive 20 win seasons in 1992 and 1993. In 1995, Glavine and the rest of the legendary pitching staff led the Braves to their first and only World Series trophy since moving to Atlanta. He won his second and final CY Young award in 1998 with a record of 20-6 and an ERA of 2.47. Glavine’s last 20 win season came in 2000, a year in which he finished runner up for the CY Young award. Glavine left the Braves and signed with the division rival Mets prior to the 2003 season. Glavine never had the same success with the Mets, as he did with the Braves, but Glavine did capture his 300th win in 2007 with the Mets. Glavine became just the 6th left handed pitcher in history to reach the feat. Glavine returned to the Braves the next season, but pitched very little after being injured for the first time in his career. He officially retired in 2010, the same year his number 47 was retired by the Braves. Glavine was a first ballot Hall of Famer elected in 2014. Like Smoltz, Glavine will appear as a guest analyst for Braves broadcasts. He is the second of the legendary pitching trio to land on this list. Where will the other one be ranked on our list of the Greatest Braves of All Time? Keep viewing every day to find out.
